What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind that we each experience every day of our lives. It is that very pleasant dreamy-drowsy state of mind, very similar to the feeling you have when soaking in a warm bath or lying on a beach in he sun, where you may feel detached and dreamy, knowing that you could open your eyes at any time but feeling just too comfortable to bother and in which you can just allow yourself to 'drift'

What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is the state that a person experiences. Hypnotherapy is using that state for beneficial purposes

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes - most people can be hypnotised as long as they want to be. A hypnotherapist cannot force you to go into hypnosis against your will

Is hypnotherapy dangerous?

No - providing you are working with a properly trained hypnotherapist. If in doubt, check credentials

Can hypnotherapy make me do anything against my will?

Most certainly not. Hypnosis is very much a 'consent' state and if suggestions were made to you that did not conform to your personal code, then you would not comply with the suggestions and would spontaneously come out of the hypnotic state

So, how can hypnosis help to resolve problems?

When we are in hypnosis we are more relaxed, both physically and mentally. When this occurs our mind operates more efficiently and effectively. An example of this is when you try to remember someone's name Its on the tip of your tongue but you just cant get to it. After you stop trying, and maybe five minutes later, the name comes back to. The difference here is that you put your mind under tension trying to force it to remember something. However, when you stopped and thought of something else, you allowed your mind to relax and the name came to you. When mind and body are relaxed we have better access to our memories. We are the product of our memories and past experiences. Sometimes we need to return to a memory in order to resolve what happened for our peace of mind before we can move on in the future

During hypnosis, will I be forced to accept suggestions?

No. The mind is very protective of you and you will not accept any suggestions that go against your morals or beliefs, and certainly a professional hypnotherapist is not going to make them either

How long does a hypnotherapy session last?

Usually it will be for 60 minutes. A stop smoking session may last up to 2 hours

How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need?

This all depends on the problem or change that you want to make. For stopping smoking it is usually one session For anything else it can range from 1 to 10 sessions. The hypnotherapist can see two different people who have the same problem, one person might need four sessions. The reason for this is that we are all unique and react differently

How often will I need to see the hypnotherapist?

This depends on the type of problem and on the progress made. If you require 2 or 3 sessions the hypnotherapist will normally see you once a week. However, some clients see the hypnotherapist once a fortnight or even once a month depending on circumstances

Can I remain or become 'stuck' in hypnosis

No, most definitely not. After a short while, if all suggestions had ceased you would wake up normally, or if you were tired would drift into a normal ordinary sleep, waking a little later as normal

What happens if the hypnotherapist has a heart attack?

Should this unlikely event occur, you will open your eyes and act as you would at any other time if this had happened

Will I lose control during hypnosis?

No. You remain in control at all times. The hypnotherapist does not have control over you and if you decide to get up and walk out, then you will do so

Will I remember what happened during hypnosis?

Yes and no. You will remember some things but not all. This is the way our memory works normally. For example, when you listen to a speech or talk you may have started off listening to the person speaking but you never remember anything that has been said. Some scientists say we only retain about 30% of what we hear unless we take written notes

What sort of problems has hypnotherapy been used for?

Breaking unwanted habits e.g. bed wetting, nail biting, smoking, drug abuse, alcoholism, stuttering, blushing, pain control (minor surgery, dentistry, arthritis etc.), phobias, emotional problems, depression, insomnia, and many of the worries and anxieties of everyday life. Skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, herpes simples and warts. Gynaecological problems including PMT, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), anorexia, bulimia, migraine and asthma. Breast enlargement. Concentration, memory, boosting, self-confidence, sporting and work performance

How successful is hypnotherapy?

About 85% of people of all ages will readily respond to clinical hypnotherapy. It is often helpful when other more conventional methods of treatment have failed
